Default [06 JAN|18-22 UTC|HBBA,HRYR] East African Rift Challenge

    East African Rift Challenge

    - Bujumbura & Kigali –

    Sunday, January 6th
    18 – 22 UTC
    Bujumbura Intl. Airport (HBBA)
    Kigali Intl. Airport (HRYR)

VATSIM Central Africa proudly present the first event in 2013. In January we will focus on the countries of Burundi and Rwanda. The countries are ATC covered by the Bujumbura FIR and the Kigali FIR, the two smallest FIRs within the VATCAF. They are that small they do not even have own Center positions.

The main airports are the capitals of each country:

Bujumbura International Airport, Burundi (HBBA) has a 11,800 feet long runway and allows approaches of all aircraft types. The approach is a real challenge because of high mountains west and east of the airport. Take a long range flight of freight or charter type and visit the beaches at the Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest lake in the world.

The airport of Kigali, Rwanda (HRYR) has a 11,800 feet long runway, too, and handles all aircraft types. Approaches are only allowed on runway 28, takeoffs only on runway 10, even within tailwind conditions. Typical visitors are Rwand Air, KLM, Brussels Airline, Kenya Airways, Air Burundi, Qatar, South African Airways and Turkish Airlines. Kigali is also a freight hub in central Africa and operates flights to many other hubs in whole Africa.

The East African Rift is part of the Great Rift valley, a 6000 km long tectonically valley where the African continent is drifting apart. The countries Burundi and Rwanda are located west of the Lake Victoria. The terrain is very challenging for pilots. Come and visit two underrated airports in Central Africa.
